Adventure and Passion at AfriCanyon
One of our guests had the opportunity to try out kloofing, a good local name for canyoning, right here in the Garden Route, specifically the Crags near Plettenberg Bay. This is his story…..
“As everyone knows trying out new things can be a bit daunting. I was pleasantly surprised by the professionalism of the company, AfriCanyon, and the calming words of the experienced guides.
Getting from the Africanyon offices at the Mill in the Crags to the start of the kloof is on the back of a small flat bed truck. However the scenic drive cannot prepare you for what you are about to experience, as the first abseil drops you into another world!
The gorge is absolutely amazing! Swimming from pool to pool as you slowly make your way down the kloof you can’t help but think a few scenes from Avatar must of been shot down there. It is that breathtaking!
The abseils are all relatively easy and the experienced guides make sure that you are safe at all times. They also talk you through each abseil as you go down.
Almost four hours later (depending on the size of your group) the experience comes to an end. The waterfalls become smaller and smaller as the gorge starts opening up.
A short but steep hike out of the canyon brings you to a small area where the truck is waiting to take you back.
A hot shower awaits at the Africanyon offices where you can strip down from your wetsuit and get back into your warm clothes.
A quick bite at the Pepper Mill Restaurant and then we started heading back to Plett. On the drive back I couldn’t help but wonder how many hundreds of beautiful kloofs there must be in Southern Africa.”
Well as they say Take the Gap! So this adventure is definitely on my To Do list. They operate all year round and can be found at The Mill in The Crags which is just a 20 minute drive from Plettenberg Bay. Bookings can be done online, www.africanyon.com.
