Sail Plettenberg Bay
Just right off the bat, we’re going to say this: you haven’t really seen Plettenberg Bay unless you’ve seen it from the water. And what better way to sit back, relax and enjoy the views than a sailing cruise around Plett?
Ocean Sailing Charters operates in Plett, unless the weather is really bad; then they take shelter in the Knysna Lagoon. The yacht is moored off the Plett Ski Boat Club accessible only by a small tender boat, but rest assured this little boat is easily launched by Skippers Neil & Simon and before you know it you’re speeding across the water towards the glamorous 44ft “Ocean Rhythm”.
Step onto the yacht, greetings from your hostess with offers of a drink and settle in, it’s anchors away! The catamaran is decorated with quoted about ocean life, enjoying life and taking time to relax – just what the doctor ordered! There’s something truly magical about the moment that they cut the motor and let the sails take over, everything is very quiet except for the waves along the shore and the snapping of the sails – you’re feeling relaxed, you’re feeling inspired, you’re getting a slice of that “Plett feeling”.
For our trip, the yacht travelled across the bay towards the point of Robberg, while we enjoyed the views across the bay to the Tsitsikamma Mountains and the odd sighting of dolphins in the distance. We then turned in towards Robberg Peninsula to visit with the thousands of Cape Fur Seals that call the peninsula their home. Lounging on the rocks, sliding into the waves or streaming alongside us, the water is boiling with swimming, jumping, gliding curious seals – this was definitely a highlight.
All in all, we can’t recommend this sailing excursion highly enough, rain or shine. We went during an overcast and rainy, although very calm, day and had the time of our lives. No rushing, no boat motors, no heavy paddling – we just sat back and enjoyed one of Plett’s absolute treasures.
