5 reasons that Plettenberg Bay is the best summer destination
Beaches, sun, waves…summer in Plettenberg Bay, what’s not to love? Our beaches are some of the finest in the country and six of our Plett beaches have been awarded international Blue Flag status for the 2017/2018 season. Our waters are Indian-Ocean warm, our sand fine and white and the bay is teeming with marine life: dolphins, whales, seals, marine fishes and birds, but there is so much more to Plett summer than our beaches – although they certainly are the jewel in the Plett summer crown. Here are five other reasons why Plettenberg Bay is the ultimate summer destination in South Africa.
SPORTS EVENTS
Plettenberg Bay is an all-year-round sporting destination. However, in the summer months, when the town is full of holiday-makers, our event calendar is full of fantastic, fun-for-the-family events like the Summer Music Color Run, the Sabrina Love Ocean Challenge and the Robberg Fine Foods Classic Beach Regatta, making for colourful, summer fun. The summer polo season is also in full swing during the holiday season, with a kids’ polo clinic and various matches taking place. The highlights of the polo season in Plettenberg Bay are definitely the polo pony parade down Main Street (the only event of its kind in Africa) and the international match at Kurland Pavilion where the beautifully dressed and well-heeled sip bubbly and watch the polo action.
ADVENTURE IN PLETT
With Plett’s gorgeous weather and our beautiful natural surroundings, there’s no excuse to sit indoors and have a completely lazy Plett holiday (unless you really want to!). Did you know? This past year, the Garden Route was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. There are so many adventures to choose from so here are some that we highly recommend.
- Kloofing with Africanyon in the Crags: swim, jump, climb, abseil and traverse the river gorge any way you want with this fun canyoning adventure that is perfect for a day away from the beach.
- Bungy Jump with Face Adrenalin: the world’s highest bridge jump may not be for the faint hearted, but it tops many bucket lists and there’s good reason for that. The thrill of the plunge and the spectacular scenery from the bridge (and from beneath the bridge) will have you talking about this epic jump for years.
- Abseiling with Afriabseil in the Crags: this activity is perfect for beginners. Afriabseil uses a via ferrata system (always connected) as you rock climb across the fingers to a 50m drop to the forest floor. You’ll have the chance to stop and take in the incredible scenery before your unforgettable abseil.
- Hiking & Biking: Plettenberg Bay has a range of excellent trails for hiking, trail running & biking. Ask us for more information on each of these.
PLETT WINELANDS
What could be more perfectly Plett than sipping chilled bubbly in the Plett Winelands? Plettenberg Bay is South Africa’s newest Wine of Origin region and is getting a reputation for its award-winning bubblies. The area is often compared to the Marlboro region in New Zealand and our grapes are grown among the cool, ocean breezes. Plett has sixteen producing vineyards and many of those now have tasting rooms and restaurants attached ensuring beautiful summer afternoons of sipping and tasting your way through the Plett Winelands.
WATERSPORTS
While we’ve already established that Plettenberg Bay’s beaches are some of the best in the country, our watersports options are also pretty impressive. A unique Plett experience is to swim with the seals at Robberg’s Cape Fur Seal colony, but there’s more. You can scuba dive and snorkel on incredible reefs teeming with marine life, learn to surf or stand-up paddle and take a luxury cruise all from Plett’s beaches.
MUSIC EVENTS
Due to the high volume of holiday-makers in Plett during the summer season, a number of world-class performers visit the town at this time of year. SA band Good Luck has their summer residency, Get Lucky Summer, on the lawns of the Beacon Island Hotel. New venue, Coco Valley is set to host a slew of popular musicians and DJs and the original Barnyard hosts the likes of Watershed, Arno Carstens and Kalahari Orkes. Plett’s nightlife is pretty impressive in summer!
All of these things, and more, contribute to the ultimate holiday destination on the Garden Route – Plettenberg Bay.
